Morris B. Sachs
Birth: c. 1896
Death: Sep. 23, 1957

Entrepreneur. Born in Lithuania and immigrated to Chicago in 1910 at the age of 13 after his parents had died. His first job was as a peddler going door to door; soon he had earned enough to buy a horse and wagon, and established a ‘mobile store'. He opened his first store in 1919. He was a pioneer of bargains, and gave discounts and easy credit during the depression, and later to Veterans returning from WWII. In 1934 he launched his ``Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour`` program on the radio, whose winners included Mel Torme, Frankie Laine, and Pamela Britton. In 1955 he ran for city treasurer, but was unpopular when he tried to clean house in his department. He also contributed to many philanthropic institutions benefiting medical research, schools, and libraries. (bio by: Donna)
