Major League Baseball Player. He was a right-handed pitcher for five teams in thirteen years in the majors. He played with the Chicago Orphans (1900 to 1901), Baltimore Orioles (1902), Boston Americans (1902 to 1903), New York Highlanders (1904), and finished with the Washington Senators (1904 to 1909 and 1911 to 1913). In 410 games, he was a starting pitcher in 313. He had a won-loss record of 131-175 with an earned run average of 3.09, and struck out 1,368 batters. Hughes pitched in the very first World Series in 1903. In 1906 he became the first pitcher in major league history to pitch a shutout and hit a home run. (bio by: Mel Bashore)
