Artemisa, Cuba

Professional Baseball Player. A native Cuba, Adolfo Domingo De Guzman Luque played Major League baseball for 20 years and was known as Dolf Luque. He was also referred to as "The Pride of Havana." Luque made his debut as a pitcher with the Boston Braves in 1914 when he was 23 years old. He only appeared in two games that year and two more in 1915. Luque then pitched in the Cuban leagues until he was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in 1918 and was added to their starting rotation. He earned his first World Series ring with the Reds in 1919 and continued to pitch for them for 12 years. His best season came in 1923, when he led the National League in wins and earned run average. He finished that season with 23 wins against 8 losses and compiled a 1.93 ERA. Luque would win at least ten games in a season eleven times during his career and posted 194 wins before he retired in 1935. A master curveball pitcher, Luque was the first true Latin baseball star and placed second in the league in strikeouts in 1923 and 1925. He was traded to the Brooklyn Robins in 1930 and signed as a free agent with the New York Giants in 1932. He finished his career as a relief pitcher with the Giants and was the oldest player in the Majors in 1934 and 1935. Luque appeared in 550 games during his career and had lifetime 3.24 ERA. He won his second world championship with New York in 1933. After his playing days, he became a pitching coach with the Giants for several years and retired from the game altogether in 1945. He returned to Cuba and died in Havana in 1957 when he was 66 years old. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1967. His name appears on a monument dedicated to members of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in another section of the cemetery. (bio by: K Guy)
