Lawyer, Newspaperman, Diplomat, Poet, Novelist and Playwright Edmund Flagg graduated from Bowdoin College in 1835. He contributed to the "Louisville Journal" with a series of letters regarding his journey through Illinois and Missouri titled "Sketches of a Traveller." In 1837 he was admitted to the bar in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1838 "Sketches of a Traveller" was published in two volumes by Harper and Brothers as "The Far West: or, A Tour Beyond the Mountains." He was editor for the St. Louis "Commercial Bulletin," editor of the "St. Louis Evening Gazette," associate editor of the "Louisville Literary Newsletter," editor of the "Whig," editor of the "Gazette" in Marietta, Ohio, and was a correspondent for several New York journals. In 1848 he was appointed Secretary to Edward A. Hannegan, Minister to Berlin. In 1850 he was appointed as Consul to the port of Venice by President Fillmore. While in Venice he began a work that would be published in New York in 1853, "Venice: The City of the Sea From the Invasion by Napoleon in 1797 to the Capitulation to Radetzky, in 1849." He was appointed superintendent of the Office of Statistics for the Department of State in 1856. The Department of State published his four volume work, "Report on all the Commercial Relations of the United States with all Foreign Nations." In 1861 he was appointed head of the copyright library for the United States Patent Office. He retired from civil service in 1870. His plays were produced in St. Louis, New Orleans, Cincinnati and Louisville. His novels include sequels to Alexander Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo." (bio by: Audrey)
