Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach
Birth: Jul. 28, 1804
Landshut
Bavaria (Bayern), Germany
Death: Sep. 13, 1872
Nuremberg
Bavaria (Bayern), Germany

German philosopher. Ludwig Feuerbach studied under Hegel in Berlin but then became an advocate of Spinoza's views about nature, arguing against the relevance of Christianity. In his most important work, The Essence of Christianity (1841), he attempts to rationalize religion, maintaining that God is a projection of the various aspects of man's nature. Feuerbach's criticism of orthodox religion made him a (reluctant) hero of the political radicals of 1848, and he withdrew to scientific study, supported financially by friends after the failure of his wife's porcelain business. (bio by: Graham Fellows)
