Civil Rights Leader. As a professor at Atlanta's Clark College from 1948 to 1962, he became active in civil rights causes and in 1960 co-founded the black journal The Atlanta Inquirer. In 1962 he joined the staff of the United States Commission on Civil Rights and eventually became its deputy staff director. In 1968, he joined the National Urban Coalition and became its president in 1971, a position he held until his death. (bio by: ronzoni)
