43rd New Hampshire Governor. At an early age, Tuttle established himself as a dry goods merchant in and around Pittsfield, New Hampshire. As he prospered, he also involved himself in the lumber, banking, railroad, and real estate fields. His entry into politics was as Town Clerk of Pittsfield, later representing that town in the state legislature and serving on the governor's council. In 1888, he served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention, then ran for governor of New Hampshire. He lost that year, but two years later he did win, besting his opponent by fewer than one hundred votes. During his administration, lasting from 1891 to 1893, he dedicated the new state college headquarters building cornerstone at Durham. Also, the New Hampshire State Library was completed. He was an unsuccessful candidate for his party's backing in a 1894 race for Congress.
