Educator. The second president of Kalamazoo College in Michigan between 1864-1867, left to become the first president of the Illinois Industrial University, later renamed University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was there for 13 years until his resignation in 1880, and is credited with shaping the direction the university would go by advocating adding liberal arts curriculum in addition to the industrial & agricultural that many lawmakers and residents wanted. He is also co-founder and editor of the "Michigan Journal of Education", member of the United States Civil Service commission, and author of many books, including "Seven Laws of Teaching". John passed away while in Washington DC, and his body was laid to rest in a vault in Mount Hope Cemetery. Before his death, he expressed that he would like to be buried on university grounds, so about a year later his body was exhumed and moved to its current location, which is located between Altgeld Hall and the administration building near the path John would walk daily to and from work. His epitaph reads: "If you seek his monument, look about you". (bio by:
