George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower
Birth: Feb. 29, 1780, Poland
Death: Feb. 20, 1860
Greater London, England

Virtuoso Violinist. He was the son of a West Indian servant of the Hungarian Prince Esterhazy (Joseph Haydn's patron) and of a Polish domestic servant. He displayed considerable talent in his childhood; performing successful concerts in England in 1789. In 1791 the British Prince Regent (later George IV) took an interest in him, paying his father 25 to become his patron and oversaw his continuing musical education. He also arranged for concerts for him at Covent Garden and the haymarket and performed for him at his home in London and Brighton. In 1803, he went on tour to vienna, where he met and performed with Beethoven. He stayed for a period in Austria before returning to England. In England he performed with the Royal Philharmonic Society Orchestra. His own compositions include "Diatonica armonica" for piano, published in London in 1812 and "Henry: A ballad", for medium voice and piano. (bio by: s.canning)
