Dr Carlos Juan Finlay
Birth: Dec. 3, 1833
Death: Aug. 20, 1915

Doctor. Carlos Juan Finlay was actually born as Juan Carlos Finlay, he changed his name around, years later. He was born in the Carnaguey Province, but at the time of his birth, it was known as Puerto Principe. It changed later on. He died at the age of 82 in Havana, Cuba. In 1853 he attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1855 and completed his studies in Havana, Cuba and Paris, France. Eventually he settled back in Havana, Cuba and opened up his own medical practice. Dr. Carlos Finley became famous for his discovery of the cause of the Yellow Fever Epidemic that killed thousands in that era. In 1865 he sent a paper to the Academy of Sciences in Havana outlining his theories, he was the first to theorize in 1881 that a certain kind of mosquito was the carrier, his exhaustive efforts took years to be taken seriously and was brought to the attention of Dr. Walter Reed in Washington D.C. He retired in 1909. In Havana sits a monument in his honor, named the El Obelisco. He also was honored in Cuba by a 1981 Cuban Stamp with his image. The monument is pictured on this page to the right. Years after his death he was finally credited for the discovery, which Walter Reed was primarily credited for. Finley went on to become the Chief Health Officer of Cuba from 1902 till his retirement in 1909. Busts and statues are found of him throughout Cuba and artifacts from his career are in a musuem in Havana and his home was made a historic landmark. (bio by: Bonnie Fortney- Wichita, Kansas)
