Gospel Singer. He was one of gospels most legendary figures. His career started with The Northern California State Youth Choir. He later accompanied his brother Edwin and founded The Edwin Hawkins Singers; together they produced one of the first gospel songs that was a major crossover of all time, "Oh Happy Day". In the 1970's he left The Edwin Hawkins Singers to establish the Love Center Church in Oakland, California, he and his Love Center Choir became very successful with their "Love Alive" recordings, they sold over a million copies from the 1970's to the 1990's. His recordings and published songs include such great hits as: Going Up Yonder, Changed, Be Grateful, He's That Kind of Friend and many more. He was the recipient of many awards including a Grammy in 1981. Walter died of Pancreatic Cancer. (bio by: Babe)
