College Football Coach. Named for the Civil War general whom his father admired, he led his team to the mythical Tennessee state football championship in 1923 with an 8-1-1 record. From 1928 to 1930 Dodd, as captain, led the University of Tennessee to a 27-1-2 record. He was named All Southern in 1929 to 1930, and Collier All America by Grantland Rice his senior season. From 1945 to 1966, as head coach at Georgia Tech, his teams won 165, lost 64, and tied 8. His teams won 31 straight from 1951 to 1953; the 1952 team named as National Champion with a 12-0 record. His 36 year coaching career, beginning 1931, included six straight major bowl victories: 1952 Orange, 1953 Sugar, 1954 Sugar, 1955 Cotton, 1956 Sugar, 1956 Gator. Named a member of the National Football Hall of Fame as a player, he was also in both the Tennessee and Georgia Sports Halls of Fame. He coached 21 first team All America players during his career, retiring in February 1967. (bio by: Wes Phinney)
