John Strode Barbour, Jr
Birth: Dec. 29, 1820
Culpeper
Culpeper County
Virginia, USA
Death: May 14, 1892

Congressman and Senator from Virginia. Born into a distinguished family that was prominent in Virginia politics, he entered as a democrat for the position of delegate to the legislature and won against a strong Whig opposition. He held the position from 1847 until 1851. He then went on to hold the position of president of the Orange & Alexandria Railroad Company for thirty-three years until he was nominated for Congress without his knowledge. He was elected and remained there from March 4, 1881 until March 3, 1887 and refused to be renominated in 1886. In 1883, he was appointed chairman of the state executive committee and revived the democratic party in Virginia. From 1884 to 1892 he was a member of the National Democratic Party and won a seat in the United States Senate in 1888. (bio by: C)
