Aurora, Colorado Police Department K-9 Police Search dog, Longest sucessive tracking search on record. Yogi and his partner Officer Jerry Nichols of the Aurora, Colorado Police Department enjoyed a very productive career. Joining the force in 1990 Yogi and Jerry started with intensive training which included de-snaking and other basic K-9 skills but Yogi's truly amazing nose certainly became aparent when it came to finding missing persons. Jerry and Yogi worked 476 cases for over 70 Federal, State & Local Agencies in 8 states. The most famous case Jerry and Yogi worked was that of missing child Allie Berrelez who was abducted from her Englewood, Colorado home in May of 1993. Yogi and Jerry followed a trail that lasted 4 long days and 14 miles. In blistering heat Yogi tracked dilligently often pressing on and only stopping when exhausted or thirsty. Yogi is credited with having the most sensitive nose on record, he was able to track the victim who was abducted by car by scenting the dead skin cells that are shed naturally and emitted through the vents of the automobile. His amazing feat yielded results when the five-year old's body was found in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Deer Creek Canyon. this amazing search and amazing dog were featured on an episode of "Unsoved Mysteries" as well as several appearances on local and national TV shows including Animal Planet's "Breed All About It" and "America's Most Wanted". As he aged Yogi never stopped working, his keen nose and amazing case work even influenced decisions in Colorado Appellate courts regarding bloodhound evidence. He worked his last case a month before his hip dysplasia and bloat took his life.Yogi is memorialized by a plaque and received several awards for his distinguished service over the years that he was on the force. His unbelievable 14 mile record of tracking a victim of an auto abduction still stands.
