Noted Financier, President of the New York Stock Exchange, and Sportsman. Son of William Sturgis, merchant of New York, Boston and London, and Elizabeth Knight Hinckley Sturgis of Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Educated in public schools in New York; later joining the banking firm of Scott, Strong & Company. In 1869, at the age of twenty-two, he became a partner in that firm and was admitted to membership in the N.Y. Stock Exchange, serving on the governing commitee and later becoming its vice president, and president. In 1914 Frank Sturgis was honored with a resolution from its members praising his record of service and expressing their gratitude for his part in expanding the Exchange and upgrading its standards. He retired from active business at the age of seventy-two. Active in many fields of sport he was an accomplished coachman and a member of the Coaching Club, becoming its president in 1916. Well known as a breeder of horses; president of Madison Square Garden, and of the National Horse Show Associations. He was elected president of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. A member of the Union, Knickerbocker, and New York Yacht Clubs; a founder and president of the Metropolitan Club of New York. He kept his yacht, 'Palmer', at Newport, Rhode Island were he was president of the Newport Casino, a director of the Redwood Library, and president of the Newport Historical Society. Mr. Sturgis was a gentleman of the old school, meticulous in dress and a leader of fashion; the Beau Brummel of his day. (bio by: R. Bruce)
