Thornton James "Pookie" Hudson
Birth: Jun. 11, 1934
Death: Jan. 16, 2007

Singer. In 1952, while in high school, he co-founded The Spaniels, a doo wop singing ensemble. His group was one of the first to sign with Vee-Jay Records and "Baby, It's You", in 1953, was their first hit. In 1954 he wrote "Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight" and sang the lead tenor in the recording. It sold more than a million copies, but Hudson was paid only $800 for it. For decades he sought royalty rights for the song, which later became a huge hit for the McGuire Sisters. The Spaniels' original version of the song appeared on the soundtracks of the films "American Graffiti" (1973) and "3 Men and a Baby" (1987), and on the TV show "Sha Na Na". After working odd jobs for many years and struggling with alcoholism, Hudson succeeded in recovering most of his song writing credits. In 1991 he and The Spaniels were honored by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation for their achievements. (bio by: Deleon Todd)
