Industrialist, military figure. Adjutant of the 27th Kentucky Brigade (Union). Served under General William T. Sherman in Atlanta and Knoxville engagements. To honor him, Speed's children established the Speed Scientific School at the University of Louisville in 1825 and his second wife established Louisville's Speed Art Museum in 1927.
