Hugo Sperrle
Birth: Feb. 7, 1885
Death: Apr. 2, 1953

German Field Marshal. He joined the German Army in 1903 and then transferred to the German Army Air Service at the start of the First World War. At the end of the war, Sperrle joined the Freikorps after the disbanding of the air service, but after awhile, he rejoined the German Army. In 1935 Sperrle joined the newly formed Luftwaffe and served as commander of the Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War. In July of 1940 after the success of his German Air Fleet 3 in France, he was promoted to field marshal. Sperrle played a major role in the Battle of Britain, advising that the Royal Air Force had to be destroyed for Britain to fall. He also provided air support for Rommel during the North Africa campaign and took over command of German air forces in Western Europe shortly before D-Day. Sperrle was dismissed in August of 1944 after the Luftwaffe's disastrous showing at Normandy. After the war, he was captured by the Allies and charged with war crimes, but was acquitted. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)
