Zengo Yoshida
Birth: Feb. 14, 1885
Death: Nov. 14, 1966

Japanese Admiral. A 1904 graduate of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy, he rose to vice admiral and was commander-in-chief of the Combined Fleet from 1937 to 1939. In 1939 he became Navy Minister, but his views soon proved controversial. Yoshida was not only opposed to the Tripartite Pact between Japan, Germany, and Italy, but also to the idea of war against the United States; he was forced to resign in 1940 and the pact went forward. Later that year he was promoted to full admiral When World War II started Yoshida was assigned a combat command and took control of the China Area Fleet from November of 1942 to December of 1943. He would later serve on the Supreme War Council until he retired on June 1, 1945. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)
