Maxime Weygand
Birth: Jan. 21, 1867
Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium
Death: Jan. 28, 1965
City of Paris
Île-de-France, France

French Army General. A career army officer, he served from 1914 to 1923 as chief of staff to Marshal Foch. In 1920 Weygand directed the defense of Warsaw against the Soviet army and turned the tide of the Russo-Polish War in favor of Poland. He subsequently served France as high commissioner in Syria from 1923 to 1924, chief of the general staff, and commander in the Middle East from 1939 to 1940. In May of 1940, Weygand replaced General Gamelin as supreme Allied commander, but could not avert the fall of France. After the Franco-German armistice in June of 1940, Weygand served in the Vichy government as minister of defense, delegate general to French Africa, and governor general of Algeria. Dismissed in 1941 as delegate general and arrested in 1942 as a hostage for General Henri Giraud who had gone over to the Allies, Weygand was held by the Germans until 1945. After his return to France he was accused of collaboration with Germany, but was exonerated in 1948. (bio by: Mr. Badger Hawkeye)

RIP General,Its no right you are not in LES INVALIDES OF FRANCE,next to the tomb on Napoleon. I am now certain you show Charles DeGaulle how to win WW2. I salute your career and most respects.
