Robert W. Peterson
Birth: Dec. 19, 1925
Death: Feb. 11, 2006

Author. Best known for his groundbreaking 1970 book, "Only The Ball Was White" which documented the history of the Negro Baseball League before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. He began his writing career as a journalist with the New York World Telegram but lost his job when they went out of business in 1966. He began writing freelance articles for various publications such as Boys Life and Scouting. Many of his freelance articles also appeared in the New York Times Magazine and Sports Illustrated. In 2002, Sports Illustrated listed "Only The Ball Was White" as one of the 100 best sports books of all time. Using his research method of relying primarily on oral histories, he also authored "The Boy Scouts: An American Adventure", "Cages To Jumpshots: Pro Basketball's Early Years", and "Pigskin: The Early Years of Pro Football". (bio by: Decal)
