Architect. He emigrated to the United States in 1829. Upjohn is credited with the revival of Gothic architecture in America, particularly in church buildings. Trinity Church at Broadway and Wall Street in New York City (1846) is considered his masterpiece. He later formed a prestigious firm with his son, Richard Michell Upjohn, a partnership that was responsible for buildings in 17 US states and in three European countries. In 1857 he was a cofounder and first president of the American Institute of Architects. (bio by: Bob Collins)
