Alexander Nicholaevich Romanov, II
Birth: Apr. 17, 1818
Moscow Federal City, Russian Federation
Death: Mar. 1, 1881
Saint Petersburg
Saint Petersburg Federal City, Russian Federation

Russian Monarch. Imperial House of Romanov. Czar-Liberator, Emperor & Autocrat of all the Russias. Czar Alexander II was the son of Czar Nicholas I. Alexander II married Maria of Hessen-Darmstadt in 1841. Alexander II became Emperor on Feb 9, 1855 after the death of His Majesty's father. Czar Alexander II began a series of reforms as a result of Russia's defeat in the Crimean War. These reforms included trial by jury, reducing censorship, and establishing town councils. Czar Alexander II also reformed the Imperial budget process which included more audits. The Imperial Army was included in the reforms by modernizing the training and education of the soldiers. Prior to this reform, the army was supplied with out-of-date weapons and the soldiers' training centered on parade drills instead of combat. Alaska was sold to the USA. His Majesty's greatst reform was the abolition of serfdom. Prior to this abolition, the peasants were bound to the land. The land was usually owned by the State or a noble. Serfdom oppressed millions of Russian peasants with poverty & over taxation. Czar Alexander II was killed by a bomb thrown by a student named I. Grinevitski. The Emperor is buried in the Cathederal in the Fortress of St Peter & St Paul in St Petersburg, Russia. Czar Alexander II was followed by his son as Czar Alexander III. Czar Alexander III was the father of Czar Nicholas II. (bio by: John Hinkle)
