Barton Warren Mitchell

Death: Jan. 29, 1868
Hartsville

Civil War Union Soldier. While serving as an enlisted man in the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, he was one of five Indiana soldiers who found General Robert E. Lee's "Lost" orders, Special Orders No. 191 near Frederick, Maryland on Sepetember 13, 1862. The find would reveal that General Lee had split up his forces, and prompted Union General George B. McClellan to move into action against the Rebels. This led to the bloodiest single day in the Civil War: the Battle of Antietam. (bio by: Eric Lowman)
