Civil War Union Army Officer. A pre-war printer and resident of Lafayette, Indiana, he enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War, and was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company E, 10th Indiana Volunteer Infantry on September 18, 1861. He fought with his regiment at the January 1862 Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky, the Siege of Corinth, Mississippi, and the October 1862 Battle of Perryville. He rose in rank during his service, being promoted to Major on August 11, 1862, Lieutenant Colonel on August 16, 1862, and to Colonel and commander of the regiment on November 18, 1862. He was in command of the unit on the opening day of the September 1863 Battle of Chickamuaga, Georgia, where he was killed in action.
