Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A Lieutenant Colonel in the 7th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, he spent the first year of the Civil War in Boonville, Rolla, and Syracuse, Missouri before joining Major General John C. Fremont in his campaign against Springfield, Missouri. When the 27th Missouri Volunteer Infantry was formed in the middle of 1862, he was commissioned the commanding Colonel of the regiment. He led the 27th Missouri in the XV Corps of the Army of the Tennessee from the Vicksburg campaign through the Battles of Jackson, Mississippi; Lookout Mountain, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta, Georgia; and Bentonville, North Carolina. He was present at the surrender of General Joseph E. Johnston's army to General William T. Sherman on April 26, 1865 at Bennett Place in Durham, North Carolina. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers "for faithful and meritorious services during the war." After the war, he was a farmer, railway postal clerk, and Wisconsin State House employee. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
