Georgy Vasilyevich Chicherin
Birth: Nov. 24, 1872, Russia
Death: Jul. 7, 1936, Russia

Diplomat, Marxist Revolutionary. A distant relative of poet Alexander Pushkin, he served as the USSR's Commissar of Foreign Affairs from 1918 to 1930. He graduated from Russia's St. Petersburg University, with degrees in history and languages. Following graduation he worked in the archival section of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 1897 to 1905. He was forced to flee the country after openly and financially supporting the 1905 revolution, and the attempted overthrow of Czar Nicholas II. He spent the next 13 years in exile, living in London, Paris and Berlin, where he became fluent in all the major Western European languages. In 1917 he was arrested by the British Government for his inflammatory anti-war writings. Following the Bolshevik Revolution and the establishment of the Leninist government, he was allowed to return to Russia in exchange for several British citizens, including the British ambassador being held within the country. Chicherin helped draft the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March 1918, which ended Russian involvement in World War I, and later that year became Minister of Foreign Affairs upon the resignation of Leon Trotsky. He was a key negotiator of the Treaty of Rapallo (1922). His later years were marked by deteriorating health and in 1930 he was succeeded in office by Maxim Litvinov. Following his death Chicherin was discredited as a Trotskyite by the Stalin regime, and his name was removed from Soviet history books. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
