Alger Hiss
Birth: Nov. 11, 1904
Baltimore
Baltimore City
Maryland, USA
Death: Nov. 15, 1996
Manhattan
New York County (Manhattan)

American diplomat who spent nearly four years in federal prison, convicted on charges of prejury in a famous 1950 trial. Hiss had been accused by Whittaker Chambers, a writer and former editor of Time magazine, of being a Communist and of providing secret documents to the Soviet Union in hearings before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee (HUAC). Hiss had filed slander suits against Chambers, where Chambers produced microfilm copies of files (so-called 'Pumpkin Papers' for where Chambers had hid them for safekeeping) in support of his allegations against Hiss. The U.S. Department of Justice followed with its own investigaton and brought indictments of prejury against Hiss. The Congressional investigation of Hiss was a key factor in rise of California representative Richard M. Nixon to national attention, and added fuel to the anti-communism crusade of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Hiss was a graduate of Johns Hopkins and the Harvard Law School. After graduation from law school, Hiss was a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. With the start of FDR's New Deal in 1933, Hiss worked first for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and then with the U.S. Department of State. He was a member of the American delegation to the 1945 Yalta Conference. Hiss was appointed temporary secretary-general of the conference that established the United Nations in 1945. In 1946, Alger Hiss was named president of The Cargnegie Endowment for Internation Peace. He was disbarred from the practice of law following his conviction, and upon his release from prison earned a living as an office products salesman.  (bio by: GravesScribe)
