Author. American writer and editor contributed stories, poems and articles for a variety of periodicals. She married Edward Stephens in 1831 and settled in Portland, Maine where she founded the Portland Magazine. She edited the The Ladies Companion and wrote for Graham's Magazine. She founded the Ladies' World and her own magazine called Mrs. Stephens' Illustrated New Monthly. She also edited her husband's weekly paper called Brother Jonathan. She wrote many poems, like The Polish Boy and some of the first "dime novels." (bio by: Gregory Speciale)
