Jane Van Reypen Tuers
Birth: unknown
Death: 1834
Jersey City
Hudson County
New Jersey, USA

Heroine and Patriot during the American Revolutionary War, she is recognized in history for the assistance she provided to prevent a British plan to take over West Point. During the time the British occupied New York the American prisoners suffered from stravation from which Mrs. Jane Tuers carried to them sacks of heavy provisions every week from which she had injured her shoulder and arm so seriously that she was without the use of them for the rest of her life. It was Jane Van Reypen Tuers who passed along information about the betrayal of Benedict Arnold which lead to his undoing. She was buried in an unmarked grave (Lot 136)in Old Bergen Church burial ground. Her home was demolished in 1894 for construction of the old Fourth Regiment Armory. In 1925 a bronze tablet in memory of Jane Tuers was placed at the old Armory by the Jane Tuers Society, Children of the Daughters of the American Revolution and organized in 1917. When the old Armory was razed, the marker for Jane Tuers was lost. (bio by: Joseph Lehe)
