George Ellery Hale
Birth: Jun. 29, 1868
Cook County
Illinois, USA
Death: Feb. 21, 1938
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Astronomer, Inventor and Author. He founded and directed three of the world's most well known observatories of the time (Palomar, Mt Wilson & Yerkes) Interested in astronomy and physics, his father kept him supplied with telescopes and astronomy books. While enrolled at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he made astronomical observations at his own "Kenwood Observatory" at his home. Hale was a prolific writer compiling some 450 scientific articles as well as several books. He also played a fundamental part in the establishment of the American Astronomical Society and the California institute of Technology. He co-founded the Astrophysical Journal which is even today a leading astronomy journal. Always in poor physical health, his condition forced him to retire from Mt. Wilson. But in 1928, he returned to lead the construction of a new observatory for the California Institute of Technology at Mt. Palomar, near San Diego for which he designed a 200-inch telescope. However, before the completion of the project, he passed away at his residence in Pasadena. (bio by: Paul S.)
