John McKay
Birth: Jul. 5, 1923
Death: Jun. 10, 2001

College Football Coach. From 1960 to 1975 he built one of the most dominant programs in college football at USC. He led them to four national titles, nine Pacific 8/Pacific 10 conference championships and six bowl victories including five in the Rose Bowl. He left USC to become the first head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1979 he led the Bucs to the NFC Central Division Championship and a spot in the NFC championship game. They also won the NFC Central in 1981 and made the playoffs in 1981 and 1982 under McKay. He retired after the 1984 season. He was a six-time AFCA District Coach of the Year and a two-time AFCA National Coach of the year at USC. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. In October of 2001, J.K. McKay (John's son) and Pat Haden snuck onto the Coliseum field and spread John McKay's ashes over the home sideline for USC. (bio by: Ron Moody)
