Norm Alexander, 67, well-known Canton, Pa., resident, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.
Francis Lowell, "Norm," to family and friends, was born on July 24, 1941, in Sayre, the son of the late Lowell "Dude" and Kathryn (Burr) Alexander.
He graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1959, where he excelled in Warrior Football.
After graduation, he worked for Swayze's Folding Box Co. in Canton until being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he honorably served from 1964 to 1966.
Norm married the former Sharon Edwards in 1966. On Feb. 28, 2009, they would have celebrated their 43rd anniversary.
Upon returning to Canton, Norm was employed by S.E. Williams Construction Co., the Schoonover Plumbing and Heating Co., and later by DuPont Corp. in Towanda until retiring in 2004.
He was a member of the Canton Moose Lodge 429 and Triple Beech Hunting Club in Ogdensburg.
Norm enjoyed living a simple life. He was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors. Special times were taking his grandchildren fishing and four-wheeling. Norm also supported high school sports and especially enjoyed watching football and volleyball games.
Norm was blessed with many close friends and enjoyed times spent playing cards or just drinking coffee and visiting with them. He had a great sense of humor and could make you smile even in the worst of times. He touched the lives of many people during his life and he will be sadly missed.
Surviving are his wife, Sharon; children, Bret (Kelly) Alexander of DuPont, Pa., and Sheila (Denley) Wesneski of Canton; grandchildren, Harlow and Scarlet Alexander and Blayne and Chayton Wesneski; a sister, Darlene "Tootie" (Robert) Williams of Troy, Pa.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sheila (Steve) Fitch of Canton, Georgia "Peachie" (Larry) Bassett of Granville Summit and Shelley Holmes of Canton; a special cousin, Al Welch; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Norm was predeceased by a sister, Sharon Holmes; a niece, Marcy Morseman; a nephew, Ryan Atherton-Ely; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law; George and Jane Edwards.
His family invites friends to call 6-8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at Pepper Funeral Home, Springbrook Drive, in Canton. The funeral service and celebration of his life will follow at noon Saturday with the Rev. Bonnie Browning and Deacon William Graham officiating. Burial will be in East Canton Cemetery with military honors accorded.
The family will provide flowers and suggests your consideration of a donation to help establish a college scholarship fund in Norm's memory. This scholarship would go to a Canton High senior football player. c/o Georgia Bassett, RR 1 Box 149-B, Granville Summit, Pa. 16926.
