Hellen Winona (Armstrong) Crabtree, age 97 of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, died Saturday, January 15, 2011 in Fishersville, VA.
Hellen was born in Terlton, Oklahoma on September 20, 1913, the daughter of the late Clarence Delbert and Mabel Gladys (Ramsey) Armstrong. She graduated from Salina High School in Salina, OK. On November 29, 1936 she was united in marriage to Edgar Griffin Crabtree Hochatown, OK and together they raised five children. Around the time of Disney, OK becoming a town, they bought a farm five miles east of Disney where she lived for 50 plus years before moving to Virginia in the late 1990's. She retired from Eastern State Hospital in Vinita, OK. Hellen could be described in such words as independent, honest, devoted, and loving. She enjoyed spending time with family, making baby quilts, taking pictures, writing, and crocheting. She was a very active member in the First Baptist Church of Disney.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edgar Crabtree, one son Carlton Crabtree; sister, Mabel Alyce McNamara; a brother, Delbert Armstrong; and a son-in-law, Roy Edwards; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Surviving Family Members include two sons and daughter-in-laws, Edgar Lee and Beverley Crabtree of Portland, OR and Bill and Elaine Crabtree of Kannapolis, NC; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mavis Edwards of Stuarts Draft, VA and Sharon and Lex Bond of Miami, OK; 18 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 12 great, great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, January 23, 2011 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Grand Lake Funeral Home chapel in Jay. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 24, 2011 at the Dogwood Chapel in Lakemont Shores with Pastor Richard Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Yellow Tree Cemetery.
