Silas, Jr. was the son of Silas W. Armstrong (a wealthy Wyandot Indian Chief) & his second wife, Sarah Preston.

His father married his mother, Sarah, on Oct. 8, 1832.

Silas Jr.'s siblings were: Lucinda (1932), Tabitha (Feb.6, 1934 - 1914), Robert (Dec. 21, 1835 – 15 Jul 1858), Caroline (Dec. 21, 1837 – June 30, 1901), & Winifield Scott (Dec. 21, 1840 – Oct. 1, 1882).

Sarah died on Feb. 9, 1843.

His father's second marriage was to Zelinda Hunter in Upper Sandusky, OH in Oct. 1842. Their children were Catherine (June 15, 1843 - Jan. 19, 1919), Minnarh (July 12, 1846 - ), Duncan (Jan. 23, 1849 - Feb. 22, 1850), McIntyre (July 15, 1852 - Oct. 26, 1926), Elizabeth (Nov. 27, 1854 - 1909), Antoinette (Feb. 15, 1858 - Oct. 10, 1882), & Naomi (Aug. 10, 1861 - Sept. 13, 1933).

His father died on Dec. 14, 1865. Zelinda died on Feb. 10, 1883.
