Benjamin Franklin and his twin brother, George Martin, were born in Nicholas county, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1854. During the 1860's Ben's father moved the family to Cass county, Nebraska. Benjamin married Nancy Calavan on February 24, 1876, in Lancaster county, NE. Between 1876 and 1890, 6 children were born: John Jessie, Nellie Ann, Fannie Martha, Louis Webster, Margaret, and Ella. John Jessie died on February 22, 1877, at age 5 months and Margaret died on February 7, 1889, at age 2 (burial unknown).
In March 1890, Benjamin Dodrill sold their farm near Sprague, Lancaster County, Nebraska and moved his wife and 4 living children to Oklahoma. On July 18, 1891, Ben & Nancy's 7th child (Benjamin Forest) was born.
On September 22, 1891, the Lowa Sac and Fox country was opened for settlement. Benjamin and his nephew, Adam Smith, participated in the race for land. The Dodrills began raising their family on this land. They had an orchard, planted gardens and raised stock animals. Wild game, deer, wild hogs, turkeys and quail were in abundance. Unfortunately, Benjamin, only 39 years of age, died unexpectedly on February 4, 1894, of pneumonia, leaving his wife with 5 children to raise by herself. (Above information obtained from birth records, federal & state census records, and "stories" by Ben's daughter - Fannie Dodrill)
There remains some confusion regarding Benjamin F Dodrill's date of death and burial. We believe Nancy Dodrill purchased a burial site in Wright Cemetery in February or March, 1894. And the posted "obit" clearly states Benjamin's date of death as February 4, 1894. However, there is another Dodrill memorial in the Wright Cemetery - B F Dodrill . The stone photo on this memorial has the name "B F Dodrill" - but the date of death is February 4, 1898? It's possible both memorials are for Benjamin Franklin Dodrill and entry errors were made on the cemetery records.
