HEAD-ON CRASH TAKES LIVES OF TWO SATURDAY

Ahead-on collision on a county road 1 1/2 miles east of Wright City at 1:25 a.m. Saturday claimed the lives of two men and injuried two others, one seriously, according to Trooper Bob Pogue.

Dead are:
Kenneth O. Anderson, 21, Hugo, who died at the scene of internal and head injuries.
Billy Joe Tatum, 17, Valliant, who died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday at McCurtain Memorial hospital of internal and head injuries.

Injured were:
Kenneth Ray Thomas, 26, Broken Bow, mangled left leg between the hip and knee, and bruises. He was taken to McKinney veterans hospital Saturday morning, where he is in serious condition.

Lester Abner, 20, Broken Bow, who was treated for bruises and abrasions at McCurtain Memorial hospital, then held in the county jail overnight.

Thomas was driving a 1956 Ford sedan east at a high rate of speed estimated at 80 m.p.h., when he crossed the center of the roadway and the left front of his vehicle struck the left front of a 1951 Chevrolet sedan driven west by Anderson, who had pulled off the blacktop in an effort to avoid the collision.

After the impact, the Ford traveled 61 feet and overturned in the road, stopping upside down. Both cars were total losses.

Two charges of manslaughter in the first degree were filed against Thomas Monday morning, according to County Attorney Lewis T. Martin. He will face the charges on his dismissal from the hospital.

The two deaths brought McCurtain county's toll to 11 this year, equaling the county's highest mark in history, 1954 and 1959.
