Funeral services for lifetime Holdenville resident, Bernice (Olden) Hooks, 87, are scheduled for 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Shiloh Baptist Church with Overseer John T. Berry officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Mother Hooks grandsons. Honorary bearers will be her sons. Flower girls will be the granddaughters and her daughters will serve as honorary flower girls. Mother Hooks will rest at Shiloh Church Cemetery under the direction of Hudson Phillips Funeral Home.
Bernice (Olden) Hooks was born February 9, 1923 in Holdenville. She passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at the age of 87 years, eleven months, and 2 days. Mother Hooks was the daughter of Orsborn and Lillie (Barnett) Olden and a graduate of Lincoln High School. She married IJ Melvin Hooks on November 26, 1947 in Holdenville. Together, they raised a family of nine children.
A lifetime member of Shiloh Baptist Church, she worked continually in service to the Lord. Mrs. Hooks was Church Mother, Church Historian, a Sunday School Teacher, past Treasurer, Trustee, and Mission Societies Advisor, and the Church Conference Room was named in her honor. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking for all her family and friends.
Mother Hooks was the originator of the Olden-Barnett Family Reunions. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; three sisters; a son, Michael Hooks; one grandchild and two great grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of sixty-three years, IJ Melvin; four sons: Earl Hooks and wife, Doris, of Jones, Oklahoma; Melvin E. Hooks and wife, Patricia, of Holdenville; Doyle Hooks and wife, Linda, of Jones; and Danny Hooks of Oklahoma City; four daughters: Judy Jones of Holdenville; Belinda Travis of Tulsa; Wilma Berry and husband, John T. Berry, of Holdenville; Michelle Madden of Holdenville; an adopted son, James Brown of McAlester, thirty grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.
