One vehicle accident claims life of Mtn. View woman
A one-vehicle accident on State Highway 115, 1.9 miles north of Cowden in Washita County, at 12:17 p.m. Friday, May 25, claimed the life of a Mountain View woman.
Tonya Dereth Ahhaitty, 41, Mountain View, died as a result of internal, head and truck injuries.
According to a report filed with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Clinton, Ahhaitty was traveling north and was believed to have fallen asleep over corrected and departed the roadway to the left, striking an embankment and went airborne and rolled one and a half times ejecting the driver approximately 33 feet from the vehicle.
According to the report, the vehicle was equipped with seat belts but were not in use. Both driver and passenger side air bags were deployed.
The accident was investigated by Trooper A Rawls and assisted by Trooper C. L. Parkins and Trooper George Hoyl, Mountain View Police Department, Washita County Sheriff's Department, Carnegie EMS, and Mountain View Fire Department.
Note: Mountain View is in Kiowa County [Mountain View], with Washita County [Cowden]to the north about 5 miles and Caddo County [Carnegie] about 8 miles to the east.
Services for Tonya Dereth Ahhaitty, 41, of Mountain View will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Red Buffalo Hall in the Kiowa Tribal Complex in Carnegie with the Rev. Gerald Haunpo, the Rev. Duke Poorbuffalo, and the Rev. Marilyn Bread, Officiating.
She was born Feb 24, 1966 in Denver, Colo, to Charlie and Annabell (Kodaseet) Ahhaitty and passed away Friday May 25, 200.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Rev Reuben Ahhaitty Sr, Ben Hernandez, and Wilbur Ahpeahtone; her grandmother, Sarah Hernandez and her Aunt, Debra Jean Ahhaitty.
Ms. Ahhaitty graduated from Anadarko High School in 1984. She attended and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor of Science Degree in 2004. She was working on her master's degree at Cameron University.
She was a member of Cedar Creek United Methodist Church and the Kiowa Tribe. She worked at USPHS in Lawton.
She enjoyed spending time with her children, watching her children play sports and being in plays. Tonya was a cloth and buckskin dancer competing in many dance contests at powwow's. She enjoyed beadwork, sewing shawls, and making flower arrangements.
She was a descendant of Red Teepee and Calisay, both of Kiowa ancestry. Survivors include her two children, Jed "Jeddie" Goombi and Charli Ahhaitty; her parents; one brother Brent Alan Ahhaitty; her grandmothers Wanda June Ahpeahtone and Bessie Ahhaitty; her aunts, Verna Fitzpatrick, Mary Ahhaitty, Jody Ahhaitty, Kay Ahhaitty, Carol High, Cindy Satoe, and Jayne Cossey; her uncles, Donnie Ahhaitty, Keith Ahpeahtone, Geary Ahhaitty, Reuben Ahhaitty Jr, David Ahpeahtone, Randy Ahhaitty, Michael J Quoetone, and Ricky Redbird and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Burial will be at Samone Cemetery, west of Carnegie, under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home of Lawton.
