Cullis was born in Seminole County, OK on August 31st 1922 to his parents Martha Faye and Joe Hawkins, who preceded him indeath. He was the youngest of six children, brothers Waddie, Robert(Dick) and Plentie(Bill), sisters Ruth and Ola who also preceded him in death. He received his education at Turkey Creek School in Seminole County OK.
From 1943 - 1945, he served in the US Army as a demolition specialist and marksmen, receiving an honorable discharge. In 1945, he moved to Oakland, CA where he met and married Bernice Stevenson. From this union there are five children.
Cullis came from a large and close knit family, where many a tall tale were told. He had a zest for life and loved to tell jokes. He was employed at and retired from Naval Supply Center in Oakland CA. After which he became a small business owner. He owned Giants Liquor Store from 1975 - 1990. He was a member of the Cal Pac Association, Black Cowboys Association and the Four Wheel Drive Hunting and Fishing Club. His hobbies included hunting, oseback riding and bowling. Many of his hunting trophies humg at his plae of business. He owned a number of horses and enjoyed riding as often as he could. He rode in numerous parades and participated in various rodeos. He loved to attend the Monterey Blues Festival with his cousin Lisa and brother in-law Johnnie Andrews. He was also an avid baseball fan and loved the San Francisco Giants.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife: Bernice, sons: Ivory and Cullis Jr, daughters: Patsy(James), Brenda and Linda, fifteen grandchildren, forty one great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren as well as a host of other close relatives and friends.
