Byron Andrew Baker
BARTLESVILLE — Byron Andrew Baker, resident of Bartlesville, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, at his home. He was 85.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, at East Cross United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Burress and the Rev. Chad Perceful, ministers of the church, officiating. Private family interment was in Oglesby Cemetery under the direction of Stumpff Funeral Home & Crematory.
Mr. Baker was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Caddo County, near Binger, to Ernest Albra and Leona Vandelia Brewer Baker. He grew up and received his early education in Kay County and later Ponca City, graduating from Ponca City High School in 1945. He attended Northern Oklahoma College at Tonkawa and earned an associate degree in 1947. He later attended the University of Oklahoma and then Oklahoma A&M, presently Oklahoma State University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He later received his master's degree from OSU in 1964.
He began his career as a chemical engineer with the U.S. Bureau of Mines, where he was employed for more than 30 years. He later worked for N.I.P.E.R. until he retired in 1984.
He married Jewell L. Huff on July 18, 1959, at Ochelata and they were married for more than 52 years. The Baker's were active in East Cross United Methodist Church, where they had been members since 1970. Mr. Baker served as a Sunday school teacher and was active in many other church activities.
Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Jewell of the home; one daughter, Debra Kevin Graham; one son, Gary L. Baker of Bartlesville; two sisters, Winnie Young and Beulah Criner, both of Bartlesville; and three grandsons.
Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers, Warren, Albra and Claude Baker.
