A number of census reports list the birth of George G. Barnum in or about 1826 in New York. George G. Barnum of Haney Valley, Wisconsin, enlisted as a Private in Co. C, 43rd Wisconsin Infantry in August of 1864. He mustered out in June of 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. He received a Civil War pension in 1889, which was filed from Kansas.

This family moved to Page County, Iowa, where they were in the 1870 census, and then to Cowley County, Kansas by 1875. --The 1885 Cowley County, Kansas State census lists this family with five sons and one daughter. This 1885 Kansas State census also records George's service in the 43rd Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. This family moved to Oklahoma before 1900.
