Services for Thelma McKinney, 93, will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Gaines officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
Born Oct. 9, 1914, in Berwyn, the youngest of three daughters, to Henry Clay and Izora Johnson Childs, Thelma went home to be with her Lord on Friday, April 4, 2008, in a local hospital. Thelma married Elmo McKinney. They were married more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sisters, Doris Clay and Cornelia Halstied.
Thelma attended Berwyn school and Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. At an early age, Thelma accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. She joined the saints at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Thelma and Elmo made their home in Gene Autry. Later, they established residence in Ardmore and Thelma united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She remained faithful and totally committed to the Lord and the ministry of the church. She perservered as the church's musician for more than 50 years.
Survivors who mourn her death and celebrate her memories are a maternal niece, Carole Halstied Dixon, Norman; great niece, Cornelia Izora Bass and her husband, Reggie, Norman; great-great-niece and nephew, Isabella Grace Bass and Maxwell James Bass, Norman; a Godson, Milton Sanders Jr., Ardmore; and other relatives.
Bearers and flower bearers will be the Mt. Zion Choir and other singers, the Women's Mission, and deacons.
Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kirk Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent via e-mail to the family at firstname.lastname@example.org.
