Melvin L. Bird, 87 year old Mooreland resident, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at his home in Mooreland. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 in the Crosspoint Christian Church in Mooreland. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, south of Bouse Junction. Visitation will be at the Billings Funeral Home in Mooreland on Monday, January 28, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Melvin Leo Bird was born on January 8, 1926 in Cestos, Oklahoma to Floyd Elmer and Viola (Johns) Bird. Melvin was raised in the Mutual and Quinlan areas and attended school at Lone Star and Quinlan. He was inducted into the United States Army in April of 1944 and was honorably discharged in April of 1946. Melvin was united in marriage to Ruth Marie Stevenson on November 9, 1946 at Ed Johns home. They made their first home on a farm southeast of Quinlan and in 1950 they moved to the Hopkins Farm. They lived in several different places including Colorado Springs, Colorado and Wichita, Kansas before moving back to Oklahoma in 2004.
Melvin worked as a Farmer, Carpenter and a Mechanic. He worked for Shannon's in Wichita, Kansas, Woodward County, an he retired from Sedgewick County in 1999.
Melvin attended the Crosspoint Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, showing cars, re-enacting at the Cowtown Museum, and feeding his calves. His most favorite thing was being a Grandpa. He and Ruth enjoyed going to the Senior Citizens Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Bird, Viola Johns Bird Hopkins, his step-father C.R. Hopkins, brother Wesley Bird and wife Louise, daughter-in-law, Betty Bird and grandchildren, Shelly and Kelly Bird.
