Martin Van Buren Knoles was the son of Asa Knoles and Dorcas Stone. Martin was a resident at Sweetwater, Menard County, Illinois, when he enlisted as a private on February 4, 1865, and was mustered into Company A, 152 Illinois Infantry. Private Knoles was mustered out at Memphis, Tennessee, on September 11, 1865. After the war he returned to Menard County where he married Melena "Lena" Frances Davis at Petersburg on January 18, 1866. In 1880 he was living with Lena and their son Fred at Greenview, Menard County (US Census). Sometime thereafter he relocated to Cleveland County, Oklahoma.
