Dr. Austin was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Weatherford, Okla. He remained in Weatherford through his high school and undergraduate college years, receiving his Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Southwestern State University in 1953. To further his education, he moved to Norman for post graduate studies to ultimately receive a Doctor of Education from the University of Oklahoma. He began his career as a math teacher in Custer City, Okla., and quickly became principal of Independence High School in Custer City.

He and his wife, Dr. Zuma S. Austin, moved to Amarillo in 1956 both to teach for the Amarillo Independent School District. David taught mathematics at Sam Houston Junior High School for two years and then was promoted to assistant principal at Fannin Junior High in 1958. Caprock High School was his next assignment to ultimately become principal from 1966-1968. He then moved up to director of secondary education at the AlSD administration building to soon spend 11 years as deputy superintendent and a year as superintendent, retiring in 1982.

His outstanding personality and love for people made working with him a pleasure as he touched thousands of students and employees of the AISD. Additionally, he was a member and served on many boards of organizations throughout Amarillo including United Way, Kiwanas Club, Phi Delta Kappa, Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers and Saint Stephen United Methodist Church.

David's primary love was being outdoors and spent his retirement years hunting and fishing with his numerous friends. He was truly loved by everyone who knew him and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include a son, Tony S. Austin and wife Christi and two grandchildren, Slaton and Kaleigh; a sister and brother-in-law, Janelle and Darill Leverett of Altus, Okla.; and two nephews and their families, Dr. Joe L. Leverett and Judge Brad D. Leverett, also of Altus.

The family suggests memorials be to the Zuma S. Austin Scholarship Fund, in care of Amarillo College, P.O. Box 447, Amarillo, TX 79178-0001.
