BELFORD -- Roy Carl, Okmulgee, passed away Monday evening, May 20, 2002, at his home. He was born August 19, 1916 in rural Beggs, OK to Roy H. and Sylva (Rose) Belford. He married Maxine Ardelle Asbridge in 1944 in Buffalo, MO. He was a Retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force where he had been a B-24 Pilot in WWII and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for "extraordinary achievement". Mr. Belford spent 16 years at OSU Okmulgee where he founded the Commerce Department prior to going into the soft drink industry in which he spent 22 years and retired in 1985 as Vice President of Marketing of one of the world's largest bottling companies. During that time he received numerous regional and national awards and recognitions for marketing and product promotions. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Okmulgee where he served as the Chairman on many boards and taught many Sunday School classes. He was a lifetime member of the Tulsa Advertising Club, a lifetime member of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society, Past President of the Okmulgee Lions Club, a founder of the Okmulgee Toastmaster Club and had been Chairman of the Board of the Okmulgee Youth Shelter. Mr. Belford was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Maxine Belford of the home; 2 sons, Kenny Belford of Tulsa and Randy Belford of Okmulgee; a granddaughter, Amy Belford Mills of Dallas, TX; a grandson, Carl Belford of Oklahoma City; a sister, Vera Newton of Oklahoma City; and a brother, Earl Belford and wife, Lois of Lake Kiowa, TX. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of Okmulgee. Interment will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests Okmulgee memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or St. Francis Hospice in care of the funeral home. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 1189 of Okmulgee and 539 of Henryetta. Service is under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee, 918-756-1677
