Eliakim Colonel Barney, was born Tuesday, 1 May 1838, at Milton, DuPage County, Illinois, to his parents, Electa (Morton) and Perus Barney.

His forename was pronounced (long E) E - lye - kim (short i in kim.) His middle name was Colonel given at birth. This was not a title or military title.

He is the male child under age 5 with his father in the 1840 Federal Census taken at Milton, DuPage Co., IL. In 1850, he is age 12 living with his parents in Milton, DuPage Co., IL. In 1860, he is living with his brother, Mitchell Barney and Mitchell's family, at Washington Co., IL.

He married MARY Francelia Dutcher, on 9 May 1863, in Lake County, IL License #092M0937 Vol 00B, Page 0221.

In 1870, they are found in Sheridan Township, Cherokee Co., KS with 3 of their children. Just before his family on the same page is his brother Thaddeus Warsaw Barney. In 1880, he and his family, which includes 5 children, are at Elk Falls, Elk Co., KS. His brother Albert Barney is living with him.

In 1900, he and his family are found at Grant Township, Custer Co., Oklahoma Territory. They have been the parents of 13 children and 8 are still living. Three sons are still at home. In 1910, he and his family are still at Grant Township, Custer Co., but now it is the state of Oklahoma. Two sons are still at home.

Eliakim passed away on Monday, 21 Aug 1911. His granddaughter Zelma Stoll attended his funeral, and spoke of the large oxen pulling the wagon that carried his body to Independence Cemetery.

Eliakim Colonel Barney (forename pronounced Eli with the long I, silent A, Kim with short I.) With wife, Mary Francelia (Dutcher) Barney, were parents of 13 known children. RIP 2nd Great Grandpa.
