Johann Heinrich Adler was born in Kolb, Russia. He was the son of Johann Peter Adler and Anna Elisabeth Benzel. Henry immigrated to America with his parents, arriving at New York 10 Apr 1889. They settled in Hastings, Nebraska. After his father's untimely death in 1894, when he was struck by lightning while working the fences on the farm, his mother, with the help of her brother, moved the family to Oklahoma where land was available.

Henry married Katharina "Katrina" Kissler 21 Apr 1910 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Seven known children were born to this marriage: Infant Son, Rachel, Dorothy, Esther, Ethel, Adelia, and Elden Adler.
