STRUCK BY PASSING AUTO, ELDERLY MAN DIES IN HOSPITAL
Deceased Was Uncle of J.B. Abbott, Well Known Gracemont Man; He Had Lived Here Only Short Time
Sam Huie Abbott, age 66 years, died at the Chickasha hospital Wednesday morning from the effects of injuries received Tuesday shortly before noon when he was struck by a passing auto. An Anadarko Funeral Home ambulance was called and the injured man was rushed to the hospital.
According to the information obtainable, Mr. Abbott was enroute on foot to town from his farm home 3 1/2 miles northeast of Gracemont and when near the section house in the north part of town, he endeavored to go around a wagon and team. When near the center of the road a car appraoched from an opposite direction. The driver of the auto, seeing the elderly man, sounded his horn and swerved in trying to pass. It seems that Mr. Abbott became confused and instead of steppng away from the car, as he turned he stepped into the side of the car. The handle of the car door struck him in the back of the head with such force that his skull was fractured and the handle was torn from the door. F.W. Barbee of Kansas City, Mo., and J.T. Maddox of Oklahoma City were the occupants of the car. Eye witnesses report the accident unavoidable.
Mr. Abbott with his family moved about two months ago to a farm 3 1/2 miles northeast of Gracemont owned by S.H. Drake of Gracemont. The family had been engaged in picking cotton.
Deceased is survived by his wife and four sons at home, namely, H.?., C.C., J.A. and M.C. Abbott. J.B. Abbott, Gracemont, a nephew, also survives. Two sons reside in Texas: R.L. Abbott, Commerce, Texas and F.E Abbott, Ledonia, Texas. Two married daughters reside in Texas: Mrs. B.E. Deloach, Telephone, Texas and Mrs. N.B. Lemons, Amarillo, Texas. Three single daughters are at home -- Maudie, Aline and Ola
Deceased had been a member of the Methodist church for many years. Unless plans are delayed awaiting arrival of the children, funeral services will be held at the Assembly of God church in Gracemont, Thursday afternoon. The body is being held at the Anadarko Funeral Home.
